However, the learning continues beyond there once you’ve learned how to draw a forward-facing human face.

It would help if you also learned how to draw a face from the side view. This way, you can draw a human face in different positions.

Luckily, we’ve created a step-by-step guide on how to draw a face from the side, reduced to 10 quick and easy steps.

How to Draw A Face From The Side

Step 1

Start by drawing a perfect circular shape to outline the character’s head. Remember to use light strokes when drawing a rough sketch.

Avoid pressing too hard with the pen so you can easily remove some parts of the outline that we may not need later.

As you can see in the picture, the circle is off-center and slightly on top. Don’t worry because that’s the way it should be! This leaves enough room for the character’s chin and neck.

Step 2

Just below the circle shape, draw a diagonal line on the left, aligning with the edge of the circle shape. This forms the lower part of the face.

Bring the diagonal up slightly and to the right when you get the length you want.

Next, bring the line up until it touches the circle shape we drew earlier. This creates the shape of the character’s chin and jaw.

The outline may look fuzzy, but it will match once we refine it.

Step 3

Erase the bottom line of the circle overlapping the outline of the head with an eraser. Be careful when deleting the row; you don’t want to remove important rows accidentally.

Now erase part of the left edge of the outline where we will draw the nose and mouth. Draw an elongated curve for the nose and two consecutive curves to form the mouth where we erased the line.

As you can see in the image above, the head shape is now more visible.

Step 4

Just below the character’s jaw, draw two curved lines that slope in the opposite direction. This forms the character’s neck.

Remember, the greater the distance between the two lines, the wider the neck will appear.

Step 5

Draw several overlapping curves just above the brow. This creates the hairline of the character.

Once the hairline reaches the point above the jawline, draw a diagonal oval shape with the bottom part connecting directly to the jawline. This forms the character’s ear.

Remember to erase the outline of the back of the head! This way, you have enough space to finish the hair.

Step 6

Draw a semicircle from the forehead to the nape of the neck. This forms all of the character’s hair.

Be sure to add some lines on the surface of the hair. This adds texture to the hair, making it soft and, most importantly, lifelike.

Step 7

Draw another half circle at the top of the head. This will shape the hair tied into a bun. Remember to add some lines to add texture to the hair!

As you can see in the image above, we kept our character’s hair clean and simple. However, feel free to draw any hairstyle you like!

You can lower your hair and make it wavy or style a short pixie haircut. It all depends on you!

Step 8

Draw a curved line with a straight edge to the left and a pointed tip to the right. This forms your character’s arched eyebrow.

Be sure to fill the entire brow with an inky black shade to make the brow look more refined.

Step 9

To create the eyes, draw a V-shaped sideline with a pointed end on the right side. Next, draw an oval shape that will stand on the V-shaped opening on the left.

This forms the pupil of the eye. Next, draw a small circle inside the pupil to create the iris. Shade the entire pupil, omitting the unshaded iris. This creates a dramatic “glitter eye” effect.

Remember to add a line just above the eye to create the illusion of wrinkles or creases and make your drawing look real!

Step 10

Now that we’ve successfully drawn a face from the side, it’s time for the most exciting part. In this final step, we’ll curate a unique set of colors and color the face.

Take this opportunity to demonstrate your artistic skills, particularly your ability to mix and match colors.

What colors you use for your face is entirely up to you! But here’s a tip you might find useful: mix white, yellow, red, and blue colors to create a custom skin tone.

Depending on the complexion you are trying to achieve, you may need to add more colors.
